TOPIC: Non-Linear
Junction Detectors (NLJD)
SPEAKER: John
Pavelich
AFFILIATION:
Spectral Guard Inc.
DESCRIPTION:
The Non-Linear Junction Detector (NLJD) solves the problem of the
detection of Technical Security Devices (TSD) such as wireless
microphones and GSM bugs, which may be dormant or inactive until
remotely commanded into operation. The NLJD is a primary, and
indispensable tool used for the detection of active, powered-off or
inoperative TSD covertly installed recorders, amplifiers, microphones,
transmitters, etc.
The NLJD takes advantage of the physical
properties of all non-linear components (transistors, diodes, integrated
circuits (IC) and so on.) PN junctions in these devices retransmit
signals when irradiated by a microwave signal, and the PN non-linear
components transmit a new signal with harmonic components that are
multiples of the frequency of irradiation.
The NLJD employs a transmitter that irradiates
a search area with a signal (usually around 900 MHz), after which the
2nd, 3rd and sometimes 5th harmonic frequencies are analyzed for the
presence of a harmonic signal. This phenomena of the non-linear junction
allows the Technical Security Specialist (TSS) to detect electronic
devices literally "buried in the wall”.
This presentation will explore the history of
the NLJD, provide and overview of modern NLJD technology and provide
demonstrations of how the modern NLJD transmitting in the 2.4GHz band is
superior to it’s 900MHz predecessors.

TOPIC: Covert
Digital Operations

SPEAKER: Robert
W. Beggs
AFFILIATION:

DESCRIPTION:
Historically, computers have been the target, and the agent, for
criminal attacks. Recently this role has expanded, and they now play a
significant role is economic espionage and cyber-warfare. During this
seminar, we will explore the increasing sophistication of automated
crimeware tools as well as the physical and logical attacks that are
used to monitor computers and to extract personal and business data.
Various hacking tools used to gain remote access will be demonstrated.
You will gain a basic understanding of how criminals attempt to hide
their tracks using anti-forensic techniques, and how an investigator can
find the residual evidence, or artifacts, of an attack by examining a
live system.
1100 - 1200

Lecture Theatre
TOPIC: Live
System Forensics

SPEAKER: Robert
W. Beggs
AFFILIATION:
DigitalDefence Inc.
DESCRIPTION:
Traditionally, data forensics is built around a process of hard drive
analysis from a compromised system that has been unplugged.
Unfortunately, a significant amount of data critical to understanding
how a security breach occurred, and who is responsible, is volatile, and
is lost to the investigator common techniques. This volatile data can
include passwords, encryption keys, IM chats, and the digital signatures
of remote attackers. Live system forensics is an approach to gathering
this volatile data in a way that preserves its evidentiary value. It
also lends itself to rapid analysis - minimizing the financial loss of
an extended downtime during system recovery. Attendees will gain an
understanding of how live system forensics works, how to apply
cost-effective open-source tools, and how to data can be effectively
analyzed.
