TSS Designate Certification Training | Now Posted for 2017!

We have now posted the 2017 training dates for all of our currently available certification and standard training programs, conducted at our Resident Training Centre (RTC) in Cornwall Ontario, and at our new Research and Development Training Centre (RDTC) in Red Deer Alberta.KESTREL TSCM TRAINING

Please note that additional custom closed door training is scheduled for law-enforcement, government and military entities, both at our resident and non-resident facilities and client conducted on-site training outside of our commercial programs. For information contact our office for details.

The commissioning of our Research and Development Training Centre (RDTC) in Alberta Canada, brings new and accelerated research, innovation, and opportunity, in both advanced training and our product development efforts.

Our TSS program has received a tremendous content update leading up to the 2017 schedule during the past year, given the vast changes in equipment resources, and a significant shift toward a modernized threat model.

Our approach as the only standards based certification program available, based on the TSB 2000 (Technical) Standard TM continues to adapt and expand, raising the professional development bar, across the technical security industry.

There are three (3) simply defined training paths to consider;

14-Day | Technical Security Specialist (TSS) | Designate Certification Program | Ideal for those just starting out in the technical security field and ideal for seasoned professionals looking to modernize their approach to conducting technical security sweeps. This program covers virtually everything under the banner of technical security and includes the 5-day Technical Analyst Certification (TAC), which by design includes the 3-day Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software | Technical Operator Certification training. This program brings significant value in the development of operational skills.

5-Day | Technical Analyst Certification (TAC) Program | This is program is designed for both current operators and those individuals and entities considering procurement of the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software. The program not only includes full Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software | Operator Certification, but also includes two (2) additional days dedicated to Kestrel Analytics TM as part of the  advanced Operator Certification for the Kestrel ® Software. Understanding the unique design of the Kestrel ® software in a modern threat environment, is essential to getting the most value out of your software investment.

3-Day | Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software | Technical Operator Certification | This is perhaps the most essential training for anyone currently utilizing the Kestrel ® software, or might be anticipating procurement in the future. This program instructs participants the new technical threat model, leaving the competition in the, "that's so 1970's" mind-set, that many operators still embrace, believing they only require a flashlight and ladder to conduct their inspections. Software defined Radio (SDR) technology has radically disrupted the old, out-date and obsolete threat model, essentially left over from the cold-war era. The Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software has proven to be an industry disruptive technology, with a fresh approach that focuses on a modernized threat model and the reality of Probability of Detection (POD) by the numbers, as part of a new approach to Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) and Remote Spectrum Surveillance and Monitoring (RSSM) TM .

RTC | Kestrel TSCM | Certification
Our dedicated classrooms permit training to be maximized, efficiently compressing the amount of time required to complete the training, by the use of a maximum effort training agenda that extends training from 0830 to 2130 with classes in the morning, afternoon and some evenings, making use of as much of the time that participants are on site, compressing the required training time to just 14-days, rather than 21-days, or 5-days rather than 7-days, or 3-days, rather than 5-days, depending the program attended. This is only possible at our Resident Training Centre (RTC) and is popular with employers and self-employed participants that simply cannot get the longer time off work to complete the required technical training. Our Classroom Management System (CMS) means each participant has a dedicated Kestrel TSCM ® workstation equipped with a dedicated Signal Hound BB60C or the next generation SM200 (pending release) Spectrum Analyzer and other shared network based SDR receivers such has the Rohde and Schwarz EM100, Tektronix RSA306B, and ThinkRF WSA-5000 series receivers as available. Kestrel ® Power Line Analysis (PLA) Module

Power Line Carrier (PLC) and Broadband Over Power Line (BPL) technology can provide significant challenges for the technical operator, without the proper equipment resources, and operational knowledge.

The Kestrel ® Power Line Analysis (PLA) module provides the operator with the ability to deploy a powerful analytical tool periodically during technical inspections, and as a permanent sensor based collection capability as part of a long term Remote Spectrum Surveillance and Monitoring (RSSM) system.Kestrel TSCM | Educating the Competition Since 2009

Kestrel ® Power Line Analysis (PLA) module offers two (2) separate operational modes the permit enhanced capability, well beyond fixed VLF filters.

Our Line Differential Mode (LDM) and Common Group Mode (CGM) offer significant advantages during analysis.

The LDM setting essentially monitors the Line (L) and Neutral (N) offering excellent detection and identification of most VLF and PLC devices present on the power grid under test.

The CGM setting places the monitoring functionality across the Line (L), Neutral (N), and Ground (G) essentially turning the sensor into a Power Line Grid Antenna (PGA), maximizing the overall sensitivity, and ability to identify many OTA signal events within and below the HF band providing an additional 10 dB of gain.

Our Technical Research and Standards Group (TRSG) continues to develop new concepts in the technological fight against economic-espionage.

The demand for real-world countermeasures technology that must by design, adapt to the modern threat environment is now available for use with the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software.

The Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software, includes several operational Spectrum Profile Files (SPF) that provide the technical operator with easy to define the collection and analysis process.

Kestrel ® Power Line Analysis (PLA) Adapter | Now Available!

There has been a significant resurgence of Power Line Carrier (PLC) devices as well as a relatively new threat in the way of Broadband Over Power Line (BPL) technology.

Analysis of the power grid is often an overlooked element of many technical inspections due to only limited resources being available, some of which have now been discontinued, and not longer available, for the isolation of potentially dangerous high voltage elements of the power grid, while allowing signal content to safely pass to the spectrum analyzer or oscilloscope for analysis by the technical operator.

The necessity of passing the desired spectrum, while blocking high voltage components, is always a high-risk activity, even for experienced technical operators, and technical operators are strongly encouraged seek the appropriate level of of operational field level training.

Unfortunately, power line analysis is an absolutely necessary requirement at all modern threat levels and it is strongly recommended that the target area power grid be continuously monitored as part of a formal Remote Spectrum Surveillance and Monitoring (RSSM) deployment.

The Technical Research and Standards Group (TRSG) have now completed testing on a new product for use with the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software, permitting a never before realized analysis and characterization of the target area power grid, with the objective of detecting PLC and BPL signal events that may be hostile in nature.

Kestrel TSCM | Power Line Analytics
Due to a growing demand for new real-world countermeasures technology that must by design, adapt to the modern threat environment, PDTG Inc., is pleased to announce the first add-on hardware module to bring Kestrel TSCM ®| Power Line Analytics (PLA) TM to the Technical Security (TSEC) market.
Utilizing operator defined Spectrum Profile Files (SPF) and a suitable hardware based adapter, the technical operator now has the ability to conduct detailed analytics of the target area power grid, safely, quickly, and easily for AC voltages up to 250 volts, from 10 kHz to 30 MHz, with a balanced 50 Ohm output, and dual operational modes.

Other power line analysis modules are also available to address higher operating voltages and enhanced frequency ranges.

Only minimal familiarization training is required by the technical operator to fully realize the benefits of completing a detailed inspection of the local target area power grid.

Power Line Analysis is fully supported in the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software and can be deployed as a sensor based collection and analysis tool adding a new dimension to the collection strategy.

The ability to deploy a dedicated Remote Spectrum Surveillance and Monitoring (RSSM) TM receiver, to monitor the target area power grid is now a reality 24 / 7 adding a powerful new analytical capability to the facility technical security posture.

Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software | Video Demodulation

We are pleased to announce that the industry leading Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software will soon have yet another new and exciting capability.

Our Video Demodulation Mode (VDM), currently in the final stages of development and field testing, will be initially available as a Beta drop file shortly, and later included as part of the next scheduled 1.34xx full installer release.

This and other previously announced work is part of our on-going digital demodulation capability, which will also be introduced under the 1.34xx Release Control banner.

The initial underlying code development is now in place and additional refinement work on the existing Oscilloscope Display (OSD) is now in place, within the Demodulation Visualizer control group.

Kestrel TSCM Professional Software | Video Demodulation

Our recent development work included the ability to | RECORD | and | PLAYBACK | IQ files and the new development of advanced | TRIGGERING | and | GAIN | control for the Oscilloscope Display (OSD), as well as the addition of a new | DELTA "T" | control.

The above image illustrates the | PLAYBACK | of a previously recorded historical IQ file from a typical analog spy cam detected by the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software at a local hotel during runtime collection.

The ability within a modern sweep environment, to demodulate analog video is becoming less relevant, however, many technical operators with limited signal analysis experience have requested this capability.

As many video transmitters are now utilizing complex digital modulation modes, such as FHSS, OFDM, COFDM, etc., some with encryption, the ability to demodulate video at the image level is significantly more difficult or not possible at all.

Therefore, the technical operator must learn to identify possible digital video signals at the analysis level rather than the image level.

The Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software in combination with the 3rd Generation of the Kestrel ® Prey III | Advanced RF Locator TM is ideal as a primary sweep platform, or may be deployed as a secondary walk-about signal locator, giving the technical operator access to a full featured TSCM Spectrum Analyzer and powerful RF Locator that minimizes the requirement for a broadband detector.

Adding the ability to demodulate video signal content provides yet another capability in the hands of an experienced technical operator.

Our Kestrel ® Prey III | Advanced RF Locator TM, provides the technical operator with extended capability by transitioning from laptop based collection platforms to an walk-about Advanced RF Locator providing absolute consistency in the collection and analysis process by writing all walk-about activity to the storage drive.

Did You Know? | Kestrel Has Many Subtle Features!

The Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software holds many secrets that oftentimes are only discovered during advanced technical operator certification training conducted in a classroom environment.

One of these little gems is the ability of the Kestrel ® software to automatically predict and select the IF bandwidth of the Signal of Interest (SOI), and immediately enter the demodulation process from a quick select menu.

This method is accomplished when the technical operator first selects one (or more) Signals of Interest (SOI) manually, during the analysis and review process, in both a runtime and historical environment.

Once so selected, the SOI is placed on the Master Automatic Threat List (ATL) and is flagged on the RF Spectrum Display (RSD) in ORANGE.

To enter demodulation for any signal event flagged as a SOI, simply right mouse click on the SOI and select the "Demodulation" menu option.

Kestrel will immediately demodulate the SOI at the correct IF bandwidth for the signal selected.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) | Spectrum Allocation

Spectrum Analysis from a TSCM perspective can be challenging at the best of times, given the on-going changes that occur across the spectrum and geographical regions.

However, as new bands are auctioned and commissioned for carrier use, many technical operators struggle with trying to keep current, on new band allocations that can seemingly appear on a daily basis.

The following is an overview of the Fixed Wireless Access (FCA) band operating at 3.5 GHz within ITU Region 2 as observed from our Research and Development Lab (RDL) in Alberta Canada.

The ability of the technical operator to utilize the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software for the active detection, identification, and analysis of band and channel level spectra is fully supported.

The following spectrum plot shows the the activity present within the various FWA | 3.5 GHz spectrum block allocations.

Scientific Research and Development Conference (SRDC)

Our Technical Research and Standards Group (TRSG) held the 3rd annual SDR Scientific Research and Development Conference (SRDC) in Alberta Canada this year, with the previous two (2) events hosted in British Columbia.

Our field design and development team, worked side by side with the Kestrel ® Software Development Group (SDG) on a wide range of current and future feature sets, anticipated new innovation, including, for the first time, setting the initial goals and framework for the highly anticipated GEN II release, expected during the first quarter of 2017, expanding the capability of the software into other SDR markets worldwide.

However, we have a lot of ground to cover relative to powerful new technology and definable milestones yet to be announced and delivered in 2016.

Our team has delivered significant milestones during the past development year and the addition of significant new features during the 1st quarter of 2016, with the following functionality pending for release in v 1.32xx on or about Monday March 21, 2016;

DSA Trace Limit (DTL) feature

Event User Alarm | Activity Scheduler

Trace Time Stamp | Trace Count Display

Horizontal Range Control (HRC)

Floor Plan | Quick Button

Waterfall Zoom In | Zoom Out Menu

DSA Colour Palette Editing Tool

IQ Recording | Playback

SPF Export to CSV Menu

Setting RF Spectrum Analysis Priorities

The complexity of the ambient RF spectrum environment requires a priority approach to RF technical analysis as the ever-advancing operational capability sees higher frequency collection Ranges of Interest (ROI) with many of the latest SDR hardware options, and the ability to store vast amounts of Spectra trace data and Raw IQ streaming files for a variety of real-world applications.

Many technical operators approach the analytical analysis phase, as a single full band, or frequency range equal to the capability of the search receiver or spectrum analyzer only, which results in large amounts of peripheral data, and a significant amount of time required to review what amounts to massive amounts of Spectra and Waterfall data during the collection and analysis cycle.

Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software permits the technical operator to better focus attention and target specific sub-bands, as may be of primary interest, for active and passive analysis, while sending full receiver range data to the storage media, if required.

Focused targeted data results in smaller manageable file sizes and permits easy to navigate data, in a time compressed format, significantly enhancing analysis at the band or sub-band level.

Whether the goal is to target signal level, sub-band level, band level, or full Range of Interest (ROI) data from an analytical perspective, understanding the design standard and deployment methodology of the software, requires technical operator experience and training in the use and deployment for collection.

Professional Development TSCM Group Inc., conducts training worldwide, as well as at our Resident Training Centre (RTC) in Canada.

Understanding the under laying complexity and design methodology, simply cannot be learned by reading a user-manual or applying obsolete deployment techniques to modern equipment resources.

The Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software opens the door to delivering new professional services beyond simply technical operator assisted sweeps.

Sheridan College | 20th Anniversary of the Investigation: Public and Private Program

Teaching at Sheridan College proved to be an awesome experience for me back in 2004 / 2005, instructing 2nd year students enrolled in the Investigation: Public and Private program.

I had the honor to teach at both the Brampton campus and Oakville campus during the same semester, which was a challenge requiring discipline in time management, while maintaining a full operational commitment at Professional Development TSCM Group Inc., and was without doubt, a very rewarding experience.

The experience gained helped me to better understand and focus our own industry Counter-Intelligence (CI), Technical Security (TSEC), Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) training and certification programs to meet the needs of a new generation of students soon to enter a real-would workplace, and interested in learning about economic and state sponsored espionage from a practical, rather than theoretical perspective.

I was able to join fellow alumni, past and present faculty members, various community partners, and most importantly, I had the opportunity to talk to and discuss the current challenges of the technical security industry with interested students.

A number of students presented an excellent array to projects, which tackled, some very complex real-word challenges, showing a strong commitment and dedication as the future decision makers in the development process of real-world security programs.

I also had the opportunity to reconnect with many business associates, who also instructed at Sheridan College over the years.

Many of whom, like me, were surprised to find out that we all passed through the doors of the college as faculty members, at one time or another over the past 20 years.

The 20th Anniversary is a true milestone that all involved at Sheridan College should be proud.

I look forward to speaking further with interested students about a possible career in the technical security field.

Economic Down Turn Effects Everyone - Really?

We often hear that the so-called economic down turn effects everyone.

Not really, those involved in corporate intelligence gathering, eavesdropping and economic espionage are thriving, as mass lay-offs, down-sizing, workplace adjustments mean one thing, opportunity for an invisible army of opportunists.

There is an open door for disgruntled and disillusioned employees and contractors to commit acts of corporate intelligence gathering, economic espionage (internal and external), and theft of proprietary information for personal gain, as a future self-employed competitor, or those hired by the competition.

Often the writing is on the wall weeks or even months before employees are actually subject to lay-off notices, or are terminated.

The vulnerabilities are even more pronounced when key personnel are subject to lay-off, leaving huge technical security gaps company wide that lead to a wide range of potential compromises, as remaining personnel try to fill the role of several employees.

The facts are clear, a formal Technical Security (TSEC) program is an essential best practice, in both good and bad economic times, but definitely required when there are adverse business viability challenges.

Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software | Release Control v1.32xx

The following is a sneak preview of just some of the latest features pending for the v1.32xx release.

The first new feature is testing well in-house, providing a new innovative development milestone that is operator centric, and significantly enhances the technical operators situational awareness during runtime analysis.

Our new Horizontal Range Control (HRC) replaces the static horizontal receiver start and stop frequency display, for the connected receiver, and dynamically updates the "legal value" options, depending on which receiver is selected.

The exciting new HRC feature, automatically and dynamically imports operator defined Spectrum Profile File (SPF) options for runtime zoom selection, as organized bands for instant zoom selection and display.

For example, selecting the R2 | DECT 6.0 spectrum band, results in the precise Positional Zoom Control (PZC) display of the R2 | DECT 6.0 spectrum band allocation on the user-interface.

All of the standard included zoom capability, remains intact bringing the most powerful zoom control in the industry to the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software.

Yet another new feature pending release in v1.32xx is our new DSA Trace Limit (DTL) feature that automatically stops the current Differential Signal Analysis (DSA) Antenna Location at a defined number of traces.

DTL can be programmed to stop at any number of traces, selected from either a default option list, or a customized operator defined value.

This impressive new feature, programs the software to stop at the designated number of traces, while the technical operator is free to tackle other inspection parameters.

The DTL feature can also be programmed to produce an End Cycle Alarm (ECA) at the end of the current collection cycle, alerting the operator to move to the next DSA collection Antenna Location.

The "alerting" feature is directly integrated with the "Activity Scheduler" and automatically "alerts" when active, during each "Activity Scheduler" event.

We have also added a new PLAN button on the user-interface that invokes "display" or "hide" the floor plan window, without the need to select the the display via the standard menu structure.

It is said the "Science Never Sleeps", and frankly, neither does the mighty Kestrel ®, taking its place, "Advancing the Art and Science of Technical Security".

Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software | Release Control v1.32xx

Our Software Development Group (SDG) has been literally working around the clock to get the anticipated v1.32xx ready for release, during the past number of weeks.

Our focus and attention to accelerate a clean-up of the current backlog of new features, functionality, minor bug fixes, and tweaking of existing code has been intense.

With close to 2000 new development cases on the books, nearly a thousand scheduled for 2016, a number of end-user requests for custom features and application extension modules, has resulted in the disruption of our own planned development efforts, during the later part of 2015.

With several months of custom development now behind us, it is time to push forward with another impressive list of innovative enhancements.

A unique feature of Kestrel ® is that all new features are included as standard, within the application, making it the most scalable, full featured , TSCM specific application available on the COTS market.

A single Kestrel ® license (without recurring maintenance fees) is budget friendly at just $3,495.00 CAD and permits Dual Receiver Operation (DRO) across two (2) separate host computers out of the box.

There are no options or add-ons to drive up the cost of ownership. One standardized license covers any two (2) supported search receivers or spectrum analyzers.

This provides flexibility and scalability as the end-user needs and requirements change, making Kestrel ® future proof and ready to tackle even the most demanding deployment requirements.

At last count, we have tackled more than 30 pending development cases since the official release of the v1.31-15 installer, bringing significant new capability to the Kestrel TSCM ® Professional Software, within the soon to be released v1.32xx milestone code.

With the call for Remote Spectrum Surveillance and Monitoring (RSSM) TM , on the rise worldwide, Kestrel ® continues to meet the high expectations set by our Technical Research and Standards Group (TRSG) TM and brings significant (and relevant) Software Defines Radio (SDR) to the RSSM market.

Kestrel TSCM Professional Software

Our ability to design and develop innovative feature sets, based on a modern, standards based methodology reflects the vast experience of our team from coast to coast, across Canada.

The award winning, Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM), specific, operator centric, Kestrel ® software is designed, developed, and engineered by professionals for professionals.

Strategic Global Cyber Security Trends Workshop

Professional Development TSCM Group Inc., and the Canadian Technical Security Professional Association (CTSPA) are also the primary sponsors of the Strategic Global Cyber Security Trends briefing being held in Toronto on Thursday, January 28, 2016 from 0830 hours to 1500 hours.

Do you really know what's going on within the network of your company?

How sure are you that your systems are secure from cyber attack or data breach?

Just like magic, cyber crime is misdirection.

Just like magicians, cyber criminals distract their victims and attack completely unobserved.

PDTG Inc., SpearTip and iOPW are thrilled to announce "Strategic Global Cyber Security Trends", the first of a recurring series of events aimed at increasing the awareness of CEOs, CIOs, key organizational stakeholders and executives about the continually progressing world of information security.

This complimentary event, facilitated and run by Paul Turner, Jarrett Kolthoff, and Anthony Han in the field of TSCM & cyber security, includes a small number of short and intriguing presentations on the current global and local threat landscape, and risk management strategies.

Unlike magicians who will always return your keys, or a penny, the damage that cyber criminals will leave on your revenue and reputation is very real.

Don't be deceived by the sliding hand of cyber crime.
